Summary

Two people realize that it's no longer an act when they veer off-script in this sizzling romantic comedy by New York Times bestselling author Jasmine Guillory。

Ben Stephens has never bothered with serious relationships。 He has plenty of casual dates to keep him busy, family drama he's trying to ignore and his advertising job to focus on。 When Ben lands a huge ad campaign featuring movie star Anna Gardiner, however, it's hard to keep it purely professional。 Anna is not just gorgeous and sexy, she's also down to earth and considerate, and he can't help flirting a little。。。

Anna Gardiner is on a mission: to make herself a household name, and this ad campaign will be a great distraction while she waits to hear if she's booked her next movie。 However, she didn't expect Ben Stephens to be her biggest distraction。 She knows mixing business with pleasure never works out, but why not indulge in a harmless flirtation?

But their lighthearted banter takes a turn for the serious when Ben helps Anna in a family emergency, and they reveal truths about themselves to each other, truths they've barely shared with those closest to them。

When the opportunity comes to turn their real-life fling into something more for the Hollywood spotlight, will Ben be content to play the background role in Anna's life and leave when the cameras stop rolling? Or could he be the leading man she needs to craft their own Hollywood ending?

Have I ever mentioned how much I love books in a series? Well, I do and this series is great! There are many reasons I love Jasmine Guillory’s writing style, but the main reason I love her books is that she has the ability to make me 100% in on all of her couples from the get-go, and Ben & Anna we’re no exception。 Y’all, this book was sweet, funny, and S T E A M Y!! Something I absolutely loved about While We Were Dating was the fact that Ben and Anna both went to therapy, actively used their therapists tips, and Ben talked about his feelings! Or could he be the leading man she needs to craft their own Hollywood ending? Unlike her other novels, Guillory's male lead Ben Stephens seems to steal the spotlight in While We Were Dating。 What I mean by that is, Guillory is mostly driving the story though Ben's point of view, despite his "underdog" characterization (in that, he's not famous like Anna is, and usually Guillory doesn't drive the story as much through her male characters)。 This is definitely a shift for Guillory, as she usually utilizes the woman's eyes more。 To me, this suggests that Guillory is very much focused on developing and portraying her male characters in the same way as her female characters—and, that maybe she wanted to try something new! While she's utilized alternating point of views between her male and female characters since The Wedding Date, she hasn't done so in such an effective way until her latest books, Party of Two and While We Were Dating。 It's been so much fun to watch Guillory grow in her writing, and it is this growth and experimentation that helps make While We Were Dating such a fun, creative, strong, insightful novel。 Anna is a fantastic character, and from the start I loved how real she felt。 Being a Black, plus-sized Hollywood star and mental health advocate is not easy, something we learn alongside Anna as she undergoes her journey。 I keep mentioning how I enjoyed how authentic this book was, and the authenticity of Anna's character is a big part of that。 Everything about Anna's character was clearly thought out, which meant Guillory was portraying a character that felt like she existed in real life。 One of the ways I related to Anna was with the size of her body, and some of the lines Guillory wrote about size (in both Anna's and Ben's points of view, I might add) made my heart swell (especially the paragraph at the end of page 65)。 Anna's anxiety and the introduction of her past was thoughtful and generous, leaving readers space to relate while also giving Anna enough time in the story to be comfortable enough to share such deep, personal stories。 I'm so glad that Guillory got to create a character like Anna and bring her to light, especially in this day and age。 I find myself so excited that there are going to be readers out there who are going to relate so deeply with Anna, just as I did, and that's honestly one of the best things about a great book。 It's clear everyone, especially after the last year, that there needs to be more of an emphasis on taking care of our mental healths。 Mental health has been on the forefront of everyone's minds recently, and it's incredibly refreshing to see an author and their characters openly discussing it, and thus normalizing the experience of going to therapy and taking anxiety medications。 Not only does Guillory integrate real conversations about mental health, but she also integrates healthy habits to maintain a good mental health (such as characters going to therapy and talking about that with others, recognizing when to say that you're not okay, using breathing techniques, and more)。 Having these open discussions is actually what helps us understand that these characters clearly trust and respect each other, especially early on in their relationship。 Because, if we see them trusting each other enough to share the darkest parts of their lives, then of course it's only natural that they could develop deeper feelings and fall into a very honest, open relationship。 I am a big fan of these authentic, relevant conversations in romance novels, and was very pleased at Guillory's thoughtful, considerate, genuine conversations about mental health。 The only thread not knitted up fully for me was related to the ad campaign that brought Ben and Anna together。 We didn't get any closure about how the final product looked—did Ben get a raise, potentially, for his great presentation and a job well done? did Anna get any extra publicity that helped her get the Varon role? I think one or two sentences would have been enough to clear this up, and I wished we'd gotten it, since this ad campaign was the whole reason they ended up together in the first place! Thankfully, Jasmine has five other novels for us to enjoy before she announces her next project (which I sincerely hope is going to be announced soon!)。 For now, you can find more of Jasmine at jasmineguillory。com, and you can find more of my reviews of Jasmine's works here。 *This review can also be found on my blog, toreadornottoreadnm。blogspot。com* 。。。more

Classic Jasmine Guillory in that this book is cute, sexy and romantic but also deals with serious issues like anxiety, racism, and trauma。 It was really refreshing to see a male character who goes to therapy, talks about his issues, and tries to deal with his problems - and the fact that Ben is Black makes this even more important。 A really great read!

Ehhh (Review Contains Spoilers)The overall story I liked but the heroine Anna just wasn’t it for me。 I loved Ben and loved how he finally opened up for a woman instead of being the typical playboy Ben。 I wish we got more on his meeting up with Dawn, therapy, interactions with Theo/their mom, and just more from Ben’s side in general。 Everything with Anna was over the top and just not likeable。 Running and hiding from her anxiety I know played a role in her actions but at certain points I just thi Ehhh (Review Contains Spoilers)The overall story I liked but the heroine Anna just wasn’t it for me。 I loved Ben and loved how he finally opened up for a woman instead of being the typical playboy Ben。 I wish we got more on his meeting up with Dawn, therapy, interactions with Theo/their mom, and just more from Ben’s side in general。 Everything with Anna was over the top and just not likeable。 Running and hiding from her anxiety I know played a role in her actions but at certain points I just think she was in denial about someone being able to love her。 Jasmine Guillory’s writing is still wonderful and I’m sad to see this series end especially when this doesn’t feel like the end and this story has me wanting more on the situation with Dawn。 Lastly this was a good listen for audible, Janina Edwards always does a great job。 Not favorite of this series but still a decent story。 。。。more

Once again, Jasmine Guillory hit it out of the park。 I have not yet been disappointed in one of her books。 One of the most fun things is the reoccurrence of past characters in each book。 I love that it’s all really just a continuation of The Wedding Date。 I cannot wait to read the next book。 Who will be the focus? Penny? Dawn? Simon?

Would you love to see an expansion of this world and Guillory’s characters? If so, look no further than her latest novel, While We Were Dating。When Ben Stephens lands the lead for a huge ad campaign at work, he feels on top of the world。 Moreover, this ad will feature Anna Gardiner, a beautiful and lively movie star。 When the two of them encounter each other during Ben’s pitch meeting, there is an instant attraction between them。But Ben is content with casual relationships, his life filled with work projects and family problems。 Anna wants to focus on her career and book her next movie that will put her back in the spotlight in time for awards season。 When the two of them indulge in mutual flirtation, it’s meant to be harmless fun。 However, when Anna experiences a family crisis and Ben is there at the right time, their friendship shifts into something more intimate。 As Anna’s chances at landing her dream film role are impacted by ‘lack of box office draw,’ both she and Ben agree to a fake relationship to build good publicity around Anna。 But will Ben remain satisfied with playing the role of a dutiful boyfriend until he is no longer needed? Or, perhaps, will Anna and Ben find exactly what they need in each other? While We Were Dating is a charming and delightful love story。 While that remains the primary focus of the tale, Guillory does not shy away from addressing relevant concerns such as racism, body image issues, and mental health。 The commentary is impassioned and thoughtful, and it invokes a lot of inner contemplation on these prevailing issues in modern society。 Jasmine Guillory’s characters are also wonderfully loveable。 Ben is a sensitive and intelligent man, confident in his abilities and open with his affection toward his loved ones。 Anna is a powerful woman who knows what she wants in life and has a fierce determination to accomplish her goals。 Her inner reflection of body positivity is incredibly refreshing and beautiful。 But these characters also have flaws and experience setbacks that only drew me in to like them even more。 Ben attends therapy, but struggles to confront his own inner turmoil in his life, such as his estranged half-sister and his growing love for Anna。 Meanwhile, Anna, while outwardly exuding assurance and sultriness, suffers from crippling anxiety attacks。 She’s even momentarily on board with using and discarding Ben for a chance at her dream job。 The chemistry between Ben and Anna was visible right from the beginning。 The instant attraction between them was initially physical, for sure, but their encounters with one another during the ad campaign eventually causes them to grow closer。 After that, they are blessed with having an intimate friendship-turned-relationship throughout the novel。 Guillory does a wonderful job establishing Anna’s feelings of security around Ben and Ben’s desire to share his tumultuous family affairs with Anna。Despite them initially believing that their coupling was purely for business (and pleasure), Anna and Ben have a healthy relationship。 They get to know each other on a personal level very well, something that many fictional relationships lack。 Both of them share their pains and help each other through crises in their family and mental health。 Anna and Ben’s relationship is enviable for sure!Jasmine Guillory’s While We Were Dating is a gorgeous story filled with sizzling chemistry, funny and relatable characters。 It’s the celebrity love story that everyone will want in their life。 。。。more

I was so excited for this book。 I have loved Jasmine Guillory’s novels, have preordered each one since The Wedding Date, and typically start reading them the day they’re released。 So I was surprised and sad to find myself not enjoying While We Were Dating, and basically forcing myself to finish the novel。 The main issue, for me, is that everything feels so generic, which is particularly problematic here, because part of the joy of reading about famous characters is delving into their lifestyles。 I was so excited for this book。 I have loved Jasmine Guillory’s novels, have preordered each one since The Wedding Date, and typically start reading them the day they’re released。 So I was surprised and sad to find myself not enjoying While We Were Dating, and basically forcing myself to finish the novel。 The main issue, for me, is that everything feels so generic, which is particularly problematic here, because part of the joy of reading about famous characters is delving into their lifestyles。 For example, Anna is worried she’s going to be cut from an Avengers-style movie, yet we never find out what her role was。 The plot is moved ahead by her desire for a role in an Oscar-bait film, but we never find out what the movie is about, what the role is, why she wants to work with the director。 This also happens with Ben。 At first his job is extremely important, and he’s great at it, and then suddenly it’s never mentioned again。 This lack of specificity is unlike Guillory’s best and makes it hard to root for the characters, because I honestly don’t know if they belong together。 Even the banter and food choices, typically two of my favorite parts of Guillory’s novels, are really muted。 Guillory does write incredible arguments for her characters, and those moments really shone here。 And this novel isn’t terrible, it’s still enjoyable, but it’s disappointing after reading and loving Guillory’s earlier novels。 。。。more

Anna and Ben get along great and they are immediately drawn to each other。 They were a fun couple and this book has some funny moments。 However, I think I prefer romances where there is more of an emotional connection before the physical connection, especially when it’s a steamy read。 There’s a side storyline that didn’t add a whole lot to this story but I’m guessing it’s going to show up in the next book。 I really enjoyed the behind the scenes look at Anna’s life as a celebrity。 Mental health i Anna and Ben get along great and they are immediately drawn to each other。 They were a fun couple and this book has some funny moments。 However, I think I prefer romances where there is more of an emotional connection before the physical connection, especially when it’s a steamy read。 There’s a side storyline that didn’t add a whole lot to this story but I’m guessing it’s going to show up in the next book。 I really enjoyed the behind the scenes look at Anna’s life as a celebrity。 Mental health is addressed very well and I appreciated how it was normalized between Anna and Ben。 From the books I’ve read, Jasmine writes female characters who are successful in their careers and not willing to give that up for a man。 👍🏼 I also think it’s great to read about healthy female friendships。 I think if you’ve ready any of the books in The Wedding Date series, you should check this one out。 Thank you @Berkleypub @Berkleyromance for the free digital arc。 Thank you @PRHAudio for the complimentary audiobook! 。。。more
